Literal Labs named sustainable AI challenge finalist

Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom, 1st November, 2024 — Literal Labs, the British start-up championing ultra-low-power, fully explainable AI through Tsetlin machine architecture, has garnered international recognition for its sustainable and ethical approach to artificial intelligence. In a dual honour, Literal Labs has been selected as an Impact Startup at this November’s Web Summit and named a finalist in the Extreme Tech Challenge (XTC) “Semiconductors & AI Innovation Startup Cup”, with both honours recognising the company’s alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Literal Labs’ unique AI models, built on the principles of explainability and energy efficiency, are designed to tackle energy and connectivity challenges in edge computing environments, delivering machine learning at a fraction of the energy cost of traditional neural networks. By focusing on reduced energy consumption during inference, Literal Labs is setting new standards for sustainable AI, offering models that are both powerful and environmentally conscious, without requiring resource-intensive accelerators or GPUs.

Recognition as an Impact Startup at Web Summit

Literal Labs’ designation as an Impact Startup by Web Summit underscores its commitment to sustainable AI development. Through its interpretable and explainable Tsetlin machine architecture, Literal Labs enables customers to mitigate potential biases in AI models while significantly reducing the energy footprint of inference tasks. Their models have been benchmarked as using up to 10,000 less energy than their neural network equivalents, without any impact on a model’s accuracy. This recognition celebrates Literal Labs’ efforts to contribute directly to the UN Sustainable Development Goals by promoting social collaboration and sustainable technological advancement within the AI industry

Finalist in Extreme Tech Challenge Innovation Startup Cup

Further amplifying its impact, Literal Labs has been announced as a finalist in the Extreme Tech Challenge’s “Semiconductors & AI Innovation Startup Cup,” a competition that accelerates technologies aimed at environmental sustainability. Competing in the AI & Data Infrastructure track, Literal Labs will showcase its AI models’ potential to enhance data centre efficiency, reduce emissions, and minimise e-waste. The final round of the XTC cup will take place at CES in January 2025, with the result of the challenge’s final round to be revealed there. Three other companies have also made the final round; Applied Brain Research, Phanofi, and UncovAI.
